Can we truly be happier at work? Science says YES!

Can we truly be happier at work? Science says YES!

Happiness comes when you work and words are of benefit to yourself and others – Buddha

Given the number of hours people spend working over a lifetime, it is inevitable now for individuals to consider making the most out of the work they do as it plays a key role in shaping their levels of happiness in general. More than two decades of studies and research in positive psychology and neuroscience have proven that happiness is the pre-cursor to success not simply the result. According to research, Happiness at work is the third most important sources of happiness in life.

Research findings have shown that when leaders invest in promoting happiness at work, productivity levels can rise up to 31%. Findings also suggest a happy workforce raises sales by 37% and accuracy on tasks by 19% as quantified by Shawn Anchor, Author of the “Happiness Advantage”.

So it is vitally important to get employees happy, positive and engaged at work because: Happy people work better with others, are more creative, and have more energy Happy people are more optimistic and way more motivated, Happy people get sick less often, learn faster and make fewer mistakes at work and Happy people make better decisions.

How can we experience more happiness at the workplace, more meaning and fulfillment? Here are 4 tips that really work:

Broadcast Happiness: Use words that promote happiness and positivity at work; make sure to start your meetings, calls, or emails with a positive and uplifting statement. Offer a helping hand to coworkers. Research shows that saying and doing nice things to others are powerful ways to increase your own happiness as it help you build more positivity around you.

Be active: Employees who include any type of physical activity in their morning routines or lunch break tend to be more engaged and energetic on the job than those who stay long hours sticking to their chairs.

Cultivate gratitude: people who express gratitude are happier, more successful, and feel healthier. Turn giving thanks to others into a habit as it will help fill your mind with the positive. Also, when the work day is over, think about 3 good things that you can be grateful for.

Create Meaning: In order to make work more enjoyable regardless of our circumstances at work, you need to actively seek and create meaning and pleasure in the workplace because creating the right conditions at work lies within you. Identify the tasks/ activities that are meaningful to you and that make you happy and focus on doing them first.

Remember to evaluate your work conditions by asking yourself “What is working well? What can I do better? How I can dedicate more time doing more significant work? How can I connect better with my colleagues?…. when you find better ways to craft your work to give you more meaning and connection, you thrive.
