Actions to take when life hurts …

“Strength grows in the moments when you think you cannot go on but you keep going on anyway”

I would like to dedicate this article to all who are going through tough times, to my clients, to my  lovely students at Jeunesse Contre La Drogue, to individuals who are suffering from any type of substance abuse,  to those who are determined not to relapse despite all what they are going through and to those who are in a relapse phase and still believe in their recovery – my love to you all

What do you do when your battles chooses you? What do you do when something shows up on your doorstep that you did not directly cause, choose, or definitely anticipate?

Life is not always easy, in fact, some of us are going through the toughest season of our lives, there will be seasons were we would suffer, there will be seasons of real pain and the question is how will you respond in those moments?

Life is hard sometimes, but it is worth believing, it is worth giving yourself a chance, it is worth fighting recklessly and never giving up. There are challenges we go through that might cause uncertainty, fear and anxiety and while you are in the midst of your life storm, remind yourself that it is not  about what is going outside of you but it is all about what is going on inside of you.

Just because you feel hopeless or discouraged it does not mean you have to be discouraged. Just because you have fear it does not mean that fear has to have you. The words you say to yourself are only stories that you are putting out: I am not going to make it, I quit,  this is not ever coming back, we lost too many people, I made too many mistakes, I am a failure and no one can support me… I have done too many bad things… All these words are so dis-empowering and feel like a death sentence, as you continue to declare them whether to yourself or to others, do not be surprised when they come true in your life. Speak instead a life sentence.

A life sentence is when you keep showing up and never giving up. The righteous men falls seven times but they always get up. Skills cannot get you past certain things however mental toughness would. If you still did not read my blog on how to be mentally strong here is the link https://www.emerge-coaching.net/2020/08/31/this-is-how-to-be-mentally-strong-in-times-of-crisis/

Remember pain is not permanent. This is not the first time you feel this way, this is not the first time you didn’t see a way clear, this is not the first time you were hurt, this is not the first time your heart was broken and this is not the first time you didn’t have enough money. We all love the sun but flowers do not grow because of the sun, they have to have some rain. So stop looking at rain in your life as something bad. Half of life is about showing up and remember that this too shall pass and that there are blessings and gifts on the inside of every challenge. Just remember who you are and keep coming back.

Here are some tips to support you in finding hope and getting back on track;

  • Remind yourself of your life goals and plan to increase your success and follow the plan every day whether you feel like it or not and take actions accordingly
  • Continue on building  your support system; contact your therapist, coach, friends, the people you trust and stay around them to feel a sense of belonging.
  • Identify your greatest strengths, assets and qualities so you can tap into these to live a more meaningful life, take better decisions and overcome any struggle
  • Improve self-care skills, including diet, exercise and sleep
  • Work on healthy relationship skills such as assertiveness, setting boundaries and conflict resolution
  • Develop healthy activities and hobbies to build self-esteem, give your life meaning and purpose, and fill your time wisely. Don’t allow your schedule to fill up with things that don’t get you closer to your goals or that don’t make you happy.
  • Keep planning for your future despite your current situation, focus on what you can control and keep your hopes high.

Hope this helps
